this time of year its more important than ever to protect a customers identity, says Erik Nachbahr, President and Founder of the Baltimore-based Helion Technologies. Helion is a 70 employee Managed Information Technology provider for Auto dealerships. Helion supports more than 17, 000 computers for more than 450 dealerships nationwide, and has been supporting dealerships for the past 12 years.
Its good customer service, once they know you are doing your best to protect them while they shop with you, theyre more likely to come back, says Nachbahr.
With the holidays upon us, hackers and cyber criminals are looking for anyway they can to steal identities and rob businesses of their money. At the same time dealers are involved in their end of the year and holiday sales push.
For example, Computer hackers broke into a dealerships network, using Zeus software, software that appears to be a favorite of computer thieves. Heres how they did it: The hackers monitored keystrokes on the computer of the dealership’s computer, then remotely logged onto the controller’s computer and tapped the dealerships bank account with the controller’s user name and password.
Cybercrime against small businesses is growing, and computer consultants say dealers are incredibly vulnerable. Take for example a Kansas dealership that lost $ 23,000 to hackers who raided their account, added fake employees to payroll, and then wired the money overseas.
Nachbahr says today’s sophisticated customers want and expect interactive technology when shopping for cars. this means businesses need to have wireless access in customer lounges, be accessible by email, text, and have a strong web presence. The business model dictates that each employee desk and service-bay, have computers, Nachbahr said. But if those do not have secure systems in place, the dealership and customers are vulnerable.
Not only can thieves raid dealers’ bank accounts; they can snatch customer data that dealers are required by law to protect. Dealers could face penalties for legal violations or civil lawsuits for failure to protect sensitive information.
Knowing vulnerabilities, changing corporate culture to think security and employing systems will help dealerships and their customers avoid being taken to the bank.
